Garuda Airlines are the national flag-carrier for Indonesia, and are based out of their main hub just outside of the capital, Jakarta, with several other hubs scattered across Indonesia, including Bali (Denpasar). They have been flying since 1947, starting as a subsidiary of KLM (the Dutch airline), and have since expanded to become a major worldwide airline. Garuda are a full-service airline and operate around 500 daily flights, with services to 72 domestic and 24 international destinations across 14 countries (within Asia, Australasia and Europe).
The airline became the 20th member of the 'Skyteam' airline alliance in 2014, which also includes Air France, Delta and Vietnam Airlines, expanding their reach to the USA, Middle East and more of South-East Asia.
Their fleet currently numbers 144 aircraft, with a further 14 on order, and includes Airbus A330's and Boeing 737 and 777's. They also operate a low-cost carrier called 'Citilink', which mainly services domestic Indonesian routes but also extends to Australia and Cambodia. They also operate several cargo-only subsidiaries.
Since their revamp in 2009, the airline has been awarded several awards, including 'World's Best Cabin Crew' by Skytrax and 'Best Choice of Airline in Asia' by the Travelers Choice Awards, as well as the coveted 'Skytrax 5-star Rating'.
Garuda currently depart from Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. Passengers can fly direct to Indonesia (usually to Jakarta, or Bali) and from there fly onwards to a range of destinations such as Japan, Amsterdam, Thailand and Singapore. Or, take advantage of their extensive partner network and fly to a variety of cities across Europe, Asia, the USA, Africa and the Middle East.
Unfortunately Garuda don't have an Australian-based airline partners, so passengers from other cities must make their own way to an airport that is serviced by Garuda in order to jump on a Garuda Indonesia flight, as there are no code-share options within Australia.
Garuda don't have regular weekly or monthly sales, however they do have regular sales throughout the year. Some previous examples to look out for include Black Friday (late November, after Thanksgiving), Boxing Day (December 26th), their Birthday Sale (February) and their Online Travel Fair. They also often feature flash sales such as 'seat sales', Earlybird sales (for fares booked several months in advance), companion sales (for two or more passengers in one booking) and destination-specific sales, with discounted fares to and across Asia, Europe and more.
There is a dedicated 'Special Offers' page on their website, or you can sign up to their emails to be notified of any future deals. Or just sign up with us, and we will keep you in the know about any great fares.
Garuda have several fare classes available, depending on the route and destination. These include Economy, Business Class and First Class (only available on Indonesia - Japan flights). All flights regardless of class include checked baggage, meals and entertainment.
