Woman on overbooked flight repeatedly volunteers to be bumped and ends up with over $5000 in travel vouchers and 3 free nights in Italy

In August 2024, Susan Berry, a freelance fashion photographer from Philadelphia, turned a routine trip home from Naples, Italy, into a lucrative "staycation" that captivated the internet. What was supposed to be a standard flight back to the United States became an exercise in extreme flexibility and strategic volunteering. Upon arriving at the airport, she discovered that her American Airlines flight was significantly overbooked, and the airline was desperate for volunteers to take a later flight.

While most travelers dread the phrase "oversold flight," Berry saw a golden opportunity. When gate agents announced an initial offer of a $1,200 travel voucher (approx. $1,715 AUD) plus a free hotel stay and meals for those willing to wait until the next day, she didn't hesitate. "Before the manager could even finish his sentence, I'm like, 'Me! Me! Me!'" she later told reporters. Her enthusiasm was so apparent that even the airport staff began to recognize her as a "regular" during her extended stay.

The next day, the cycle repeated. Berry returned to the airport only to find the subsequent flight was also full. An airline employee casually mentioned that the route was overbooked until mid-August, a detail Berry immediately began to calculate for its potential profit. Recognizing that her freelance status allowed her to work from anywhere—including a four-star hotel in Naples—she decided to "milk the situation" for as long as the airline was willing to pay.

Over the course of three extra nights in Naples, Berry's total compensation grew steadily. By the time she finally boarded a flight home on her fourth attempt, she had accumulated $3,550 in travel credits (approx. $5,073 AUD). On top of the vouchers, American Airlines provided her with private car transfers and stays at luxury accommodations, including the Grand Hotel Vanvitelli. She documented the entire experience on TikTok, jokingly calling it "Camp American Airlines."

Berry’s story quickly went viral as viewers watched her dine on three-course Italian meals and enjoy wine, all on the airline's tab. Although she had initially set a "dream goal" of reaching $10,000 USD (approx. $14,292 AUD) in credits to fund a world tour, she eventually returned home to Philadelphia happy with her windfall. She plans to use her stack of vouchers to fund future photography trips to destinations like Hawaii, Rio de Janeiro, and the Caribbean.

Her experience serves as a high-profile reminder of the benefits available to travelers with flexible schedules. While overbooking is a common industry practice, Berry proved that with a bit of patience and a positive attitude, an "inconvenient" delay can be transformed into thousands of dollars in future travel and an unforgettable, all-expenses-paid Italian holiday.
