Step back to the 1800s! This massive pioneer village in SA has 110+ authentic buildings, a vintage railway plus an eerie ghost tour after dark

Tucked just off the highway near Tailem Bend, there’s a place where time doesn’t just slow down—it practically rewinds. Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village is the kind of destination that feels like stepping into a living movie set, where dusty streets, creaky shopfronts and old-world charm come together in one of Australia’s most unexpectedly fascinating historical attractions. And with more than 110 buildings to explore, it’s not just a quick stop—it’s a full-blown journey into the past.

The story begins in 1982, when local man Peter Squires set out to create something extraordinary. Inspired after visiting another heritage village, he began collecting historic buildings—some more than a century old—and relocating them to his family property. By 1987, the village officially opened to the public, and what started as a passion project quickly grew into the largest pioneer village in Australia.

What makes Old Tailem Town truly remarkable is its authenticity. Many of the buildings weren’t replicas—they were painstakingly transported from across the country, sometimes in one piece, other times dismantled plank by plank and rebuilt onsite. The result? A fully immersive township that captures everyday life in South Australia from around 1860 through to the mid-20th century, complete with original artefacts, stocked shop shelves and even functioning vintage equipment.

As you wander through its 11 streets, you’ll find everything from old schools and hospitals to bakeries, pubs and even a Cobb & Co terminus—each one telling its own story of early Australian life. There’s a theatre with working projectors, antique machinery, and even early speedboats on display, giving visitors a glimpse into how people worked, travelled and entertained themselves long before modern conveniences. It’s not just history you see here—you feel it.

But Old Tailem Town isn’t just about buildings—it’s about preserving a way of life. Squires’ vision was to create a “cultural centre” that helps younger generations understand how far society has come, and how people once lived with far fewer resources but plenty of ingenuity. Today, that vision still resonates, drawing visitors from across Australia and beyond who are curious to experience history in a hands-on, self-guided way.

In a country filled with polished museums and modern attractions, Old Tailem Town stands out for its raw, nostalgic charm. It’s big, a little quirky, deeply authentic—and completely unforgettable. Whether you’re a history buff, a road tripper or just someone who loves discovering hidden gems, this South Australian time capsule is proof that sometimes the best adventures are the ones that take you backwards.
