Travelling to the Maldives from Australia is about to get a whole lot easier — and a lot more tempting.
For the first time ever, Australians will soon be able to fly non-stop from Melbourne to the Maldives, thanks to a new partnership between travel company Luxury Escapes and Maldivian, the island nation’s national airline. The direct service will link Melbourne with Malé, opening a quicker path to one of the world’s most sought-after tropical escapes.
Until now, Aussie travellers dreaming of turquoise lagoons and overwater villas had to endure at least one stopover — often in hubs like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Dubai — stretching the journey to 15–20 hours or more. The new nonstop flight will slash that travel time to about 11 hours, making the Indian Ocean paradise significantly more accessible.
The flights are scheduled to launch on 18 May 2026, with a weekly service planned for an initial six-month season. The route will be operated by Maldivian using a wide-body Airbus A330-200, featuring lie-flat Business Class seats and roomy Economy cabins.
In an unusual twist, the flights will be sold exclusively through Luxury Escapes packages, meaning travellers will book the flight as part of a bundled holiday that includes resort stays, meals and activities.
And that could make planning the ultimate Maldives getaway easier than ever. From private-island resorts to coral reefs and powder-white beaches, the destination has long been a bucket-list favourite for Australians — and demand keeps growing. Travel data shows the Maldives ranking among the most popular overseas holiday spots for Aussie travellers in recent years.
With the stopover slog finally gone, paradise is suddenly a lot closer. For Australians dreaming of sipping cocktails over crystal-clear lagoons or waking up in an overwater villa, the Maldives just moved from “epic but far away” to surprisingly doable. ✈️🌴
