Major US Airline trialing free service that sends a driver to your house to pick up your checked luggage before your flight

United Airlines is testing a new service that could quietly remove one of the most painful parts of flying: hauling your luggage to the airport. Called “Home Bag Pick-Up,” the concept is simple but potentially game-changing. Instead of dragging suitcases through traffic, terminals, and check-in queues, passengers can have their bags collected straight from home before their flight.

The trial first surfaced in March 2026 when some travellers departing from Chicago O'Hare International Airport noticed a pop-up in the United app promoting the feature as a “New FREE service.” Under the proposed model, a logistics partner is sent to your door the day before departure. They verify your identity, tag and seal your luggage, and transport it directly to the airport on your behalf.

From there, the bags follow the normal airport process. They are screened through standard security systems and loaded onto your flight just like any other checked luggage. The difference is on the passenger side: you can arrive at the airport with only a carry-on and head straight to security, skipping the entire check-in counter experience.

Right now, the rollout is extremely limited. United has confirmed it is only being shown to a small number of customers as part of a pilot program, mainly in select Chicago-area postcodes. The timing is not accidental. The airline is ramping up operations at O’Hare to its largest schedule ever, while Terminal 1 physically cannot expand its check-in footprint. Offloading baggage processing away from the airport could ease congestion in a way infrastructure upgrades cannot.

While the idea might feel futuristic, it is not entirely new. Similar services have already been offered in parts of Europe through third-party providers, usually as a paid add-on. What stands out here is that United is currently positioning Home Bag Pick-Up as free, at least during the trial phase. That raises obvious questions about long-term viability, scalability across other cities, and what happens if something goes wrong—like a missed pickup the day before an international flight.

It is also worth noting that United Airlines has already been experimenting with rethinking baggage logistics from the other direction. The airline offers a service that delivers your checked bags to your home or hotel after you land, meaning you can skip baggage claim entirely. Home Bag Pick-Up effectively flips that model, hinting at a future where the airport baggage process could be largely invisible—at least for those willing to trust it.
