Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein revealed today at a press conference that Tasmania is working hard to have an international terminal ready at Hobart Airport within 8 - 10 weeks.
He said that the state is negotiating with "the relevant airlines" and the Federal government to form a travel bubble with New Zealand, and to quarantine and transit international passengers returning from Antarctica.
It was hoped that Border Force personnel would remain on a permanent basis at Hobart Airport, and that the demand for New Zealand - Tasmania direct flights would be demonstrated. Premier Gutwein was confident of strong demand from the New Zealand end.
The announcements were made in conjunction with the release of Tasmania's State Border Strategy today.
The Premier outlined the requirements for people coming into Tasmania from interstate when Tasmania's border opens from October 26. In bound passengers will need to register their travel plans and contact details on the government's travel app Tas E Travel.
Incoming passengers will also undergo health checks upon arrival at Hobart and Launceston airports. Gutwein stressed government agencies were well prepared to manage any outbreak of the coronavirus which may occur as a result of Tasmania opening its borders.
Further details regarding registration and the Tasmanian government's requirements can be found on its government website.
The island state is set to open its borders to "safe jurisdictions" WA, SA, NT and Queensland on October 26. Those jurisdictions have not had a case of community transmission of Covid-19 in 28 days or more.
Nonetheless, the government has capacity to undertake 2000 tests a day and has procedures in place to contain an outbreak should the coronavirus dare to rear its head on the Apple Isle again.
On October 19 Tassie will make the decision whether to open with New South Wales, and on December 1 it will update its border plans with Victoria.
Premier Gutwein reiterated that although Tasmania is not in a position to receive "mercy flights", international carriers bringing stranded Aussies home; it is committed to doing its share by contributing financially.
