Today, Qantas announced it will be launching a new route between Sydney and Launceston, which will run through the summer holidays.
As border restrictions have eased between NSW and Tasmania, Qantas have seen an opportunity to operate the route three times a week using its Boeing 717 aircraft. The route will begin running on the 4th December.
As of the 1st February, the service will increase to four times a week. If there is demand, the airline will consider increasing the route beyond the eight-week period.
This is the first time Qantas have flown between Sydney and Launceston since 2004.
The airline will also be restarting flights between Hobart and Sydney, beginning with 11 return services from the 6th November.
Qantas are loving Tassie right now, with two other routes launched recently – Brisbane to Hobart with Qantas, and Gold Coast to Hobart on Jetstar. The addition of all these routes means more than 125,000 extra seats available between Tasmania and the mainland for December.
“As the national carrier, we’re delighted to add direct flights between Launceston and Sydney for the first time in 16 years. These new services to Launceston will help more people discover Tasmania’s beautiful north and give locals more options to get to Sydney. We’ll keep a close eye on demand and if it proves successful we will look to extend the service. We’re delighted to be reconnecting Australia and these flights will help more of our people get back to work.”
