Howard Springs, the quarantine facility in Darwin, is set to expand its role and process international arrivals as well as domestic, according to the ABC.

Beginning in just a few weeks, the facility will process about 1000 international travellers a month, in a 2 week rotation of 500.

There will be 8 Qantas flights to bring stranded Australians back home. Four from London and four from India. Flights could start as early as next week.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that extensive preparations have already been made.

"We’re in the final stages of concluding those arrangements" he said.

“We’ve been working now for some months as we’ve been getting more and more Australians home, particularly those in vulnerable situations,”

There are estimated to be around 29,000 Australians overseas who want to return, but are not able to due to travel restrictions.

The Qantas flights will cost about $2,000 from London and $1,000 from India.

Returnees will also have to pay for their stay at Howard Springs. Currently that is $2,500 per person or $5,000 for a family of 2 or more.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner is flying to Sydney to talk to Scott Morrison on Friday, and said that this would be the "final conversation".

"Both of us want to see more Australians home by Christmas and we'll be talking about how we can scale up Howard Springs to do that," said Mr. Gunner.
